Episode 130: Knit the Strip
This episode is a travelogue of my recent visit to Pittsburgh’s Strip District to hang out with my friend, Marybeth. We had many adventures to locations of interest to fiber enthusiasts, so I thought that listeners would enjoy hearing all about my visit.

The juried triennial exhibit at the Society of Contemporary Craft was a truly thoughtful and wide-ranging collection of works by contemporary fiber artists. Marybeth and I started matching cowls with Rifton yarn we purchased from Jill Draper [Rhinebeck ’15]. I pulled some yarn from the beginning of my cake so that I could start my project with that luminous purple color. On our agenda was a mega-sale at LOOM: Exquisite Textiles. We arrived 10 minutes before opening time and there was no line. I don’t know why not because the deals were astounding. One of the fun purchases at LOOM was the $5 grab bag with an assortment of vintage notions. We had great fun opening these. Grab bag contents revealed. Sale finds include silk remnants, a 1/2 yard cut of cotton laminate, a piece of vintage Japanese katagami fabric, and three yards of telephone print. The LOOM Showroom in Morningside is new, and has a great selection of contemporary fabrics and indie patterns. I couldn’t resist some luna moth fabric for a top and the Willow Dress pattern which may be a great way of using those 1 yard silk remnants. The Fiberart International show was our final fibery destination. The poster features a tatted tongue veil worn by the artist in a short video. Some of the pieces were avante garde, and some were more traditional. The show as a whole was incredibly powerful and inspiring.
